Satish Jagnandan won his fourth consecutive Open singles title, defeating a game Cesar Sala in the final, 12, (16), 3. Sala rallied in the second game from a 13-9 deficit to force the tiebreaker. “This was the most pressure of all my wins,” said Jagnandan. “I came into this with a sore back but it held up well.”
Sala had a hard time getting loose in the doubles final later on Sunday as PeeWee Castro and Willie Polanco took charge in the first game. “He (Sala) won’t get loose until they get 20,” said his partner Joe Kaplan during a timeout. “He (Sala) hasn’t for 20 years, so this won’t be any different.” Kaplan’s words rang true as he and Sala rebounded from a first-game loss to win the next two games and defend their title.
Tracy Davis regained the Women’s Open singles title over defending champ Theresa McCourt on Saturday and followed that up with a doubles win on Sunday with McCourt to earn the singles and doubles slam.

Tracy Davis regained the Women’s Open singles title over defending champ Theresa McCourt on Saturday. Davis and McCourt will be looking to add the doubles title on Sunday.
Satish Jagnandan and Cesar Sala will square off again for the men’s title on Sunday with Satish trying to make it four in a row. Sala and Joe Kaplan will try to defend their doubles title over Willie Polanco and Pee Wee Castro. Rookie Wright made it to the courts today and gave Sala one good game before cramps got the best of him again after his trip to the hospital on Friday.

Anver Suleiman was the first champion crowned in New York when he won a close tiebreaker in the 70-plus final.
Graham Palmore won the 65s, Abe Haiman won the 60s and Fred Cole won the 50s all on Friday, Sandy Ng overpowered Ana Ng (no relation) in the Women’s B final and Tracy Davis will face Theresa McCourt in the Women’s Open on Saturday.
Rookie Wright edged PeeWee Castro in a grueling tiebreaker that saw both players cramp near the end. After the match, Rookie headed to the ocean to cool off and passed out in the water. Rushed to the hospital to get fluids in him, Rookie wasn’t able to play his doubles match but did make it back to the courts to a cheer from the crowd and hopes to take the court for his semifinal on
